Wormy cake, wormy cake!

As you well know, Sam just loves to talk and talk and talk! We're going to several group activities these days and he is not at all shy about answering every question posed by instructors (even rhetorical ones) immediately and with great enthusiasm. I actually have to distract him at key moments to allow other kids to get a word in edgewise. At home he doesn't let up either. Really, he doesn't let up. Ever. And adorable as he is, I do find myself fantasizing about going on a silent meditation retreat fairly often.

Sam is particularly fond of nonsequitur questions and comments, especially when tired. At lunch today, I decided to keep a covert record of the questions Sam asked during the last three minutes of the meal. Here's what I recorded:

"Why do we put a cover on the grill?"
(answer)
"How do flowers grow?"
(answer)
"Look! This side of my grilled cheese is darker than this one. Why? Tell me why!"
(answer)
"Can you say this, Mommy: 'Wormy cake, wormy cake, wormy cake'?"

And since we're talking nonsequitur, I'll include a picture of the fire chief helping me make pumpkin soup for lunch.

Nonsequiturs aside, following a wonderful visit from Libby this past weekend, she remarked that what stands out for her is how interested Sam is in other people for his age. He asked, for example, how her flight was and whether she was grumpy or happy. He also routinely asks us how we slept, grills Keith after returning home from work about his day ("What did you eat for lunch today? Did you teach any classes? Did you see the marching band?" etc.) and inquires about how I feel after taking a walk.

Sweet kid indeed, with a whole lot to say.

Sam is definitely a people person--which can be pretty exhausting on the other end of the conversation. But he is oh, so, incredibly lovable -- and loved. Soon he'll have Mimi to talk with for a whole week -- a treat for both of them.
