Independence Day

Sam is really enjoying this 4th of July weekend and his parents are totally amazed by how much independence he is suddenly comfortable with. It started with his first music class on Friday morning. I thought we'd mostly stick to the sidelines and observe, but Sam marched in, assumed his place in the circle of kids, asked his neighbor what her name was and never looked back. Since this was a parent-participation event, I felt the need to sit close to him so I wouldn't look totally foolish singing and parading around with instruments, but he totally held his own with a group of mostly-four-year-olds and had a wonderful time drumming, dancing and singing. And then-- joy of joys-- he initiated and then led the whole group in singing "The Wheels on the Bus." I smiled the entire time.

Later in the day, we walked over to Richmond's Fourth of July festivities (held on July 3rd...go figure) where we enjoyed ice-cream sandwiches, went down a huge slide in a burlap sack (wheeee!), rocked out to the music and generally had a wonderful time together after a pretty stressful week. We were totally surprised when Sam wanted to make his first venture into a very crowded, sugar-fueled bouncy house by himself. We laughed until we cried as he sang "Me in the bouncy house, jumping up and down!," for 20 solid minutes...not jumping so much as he was struggling to stand up then laughing and continuing with his song as he flopped over again and again.

It may not sound very significant, but both events struck us as real turning points for this particular little guy. We ended the day by cuddling together under a blanket to watch the fireworks which Sam absolutely looooved. Independence day, indeed. Happy Fourth, everyone. And in closing, a heartfelt welcome to Jonah Richard Feldman, Sam's new cousin:

Lots of love to all!

Jonah's cousin Sam is truly coming into his own, thanks in no small part, I think, to his nurturing parents. Sam's a lucky guy. And, by the way, so is Jonah. Can't wait for another gathering of the clan.

How exciting for you all..I agree with Nana...good parenting has given little Sam a good healthy dose of self-esteem...and I must say...he has also been given some cutie genes to boot! Loved the sign for Jonah! Hooray!
